What is Thermoacoustics?

​Thermoacoustics is a proven heat-to-energy conversion technology, successfully used by NASA and naval forces around the world.  Unlike traditional heat engines, thermoacoustic systems use sound waves as a “virtual piston”, eliminating the need for moving parts like pistons or valves.

This results in:

The Challenge with Existing Systems

Traditional thermoacoustic systems have demonstrated efficiencies of up to 59% of the Carnot limit - an impressive benchmark.


However, to achieve useful power densities, these systems must operate at both high pressures (typically 20–170 bar) and high temperatures, which in turn requires:


  • Expensive, high-performance components

  • Compliance with demanding safety and certification standards

  • Specialized materials and complex engineering


As a result, existing systems are costly to build, heavy, and difficult to scale for broader industrial use.

Our Breakthrough: Phase-Change Thermoacoustics

Thermagix has developed the next-generation solution: Phase-Change Thermoacoustics.

By integrating evaporation and condensation processes (phase-change) into the thermoacoustic cycle, we achieve:

 

  • A 100x increase in power density

  • Higher efficiency at significantly lower pressures

  • The ability to harvest heat from sources as low as 60-100℃

  • A lightweight, modular, and plug & play system design

 

This breakthrough dramatically reduces cost and complexity, while opening the door to low-grade heat recovery across a range of industries.
